The Trunyan Village
Trunyan is an original Balinese village. Trunyan is located at the edge of the Lake Batur across Toya Bungkah village. This village can be accessed by boat in 15 minutes sailing from a small harbor at Buahan village (which is located about 4 kms from Penelokan village).
Trunyan, Bali Aga and the Unburried BodyA scenic morning drive direct to Penelokan where a steep winding road leads down to the shores of lake Batur. Motor boats await to take you across the lake to a village strangling on the brink between past and future. Trunyan, due to its isolated position and the secretive nature is a people, has retained its pre-Hindu animist customs and a tradition of primitive ritual and ceremony unique in Bali.
The inhabitants call themselves the ‘Bali Aga’ or ‘Original Balinese’. Here the dead are not cremated, but simply laid out in a ravine not far from the village of the mercy of nature and the elements.
The strange phenomenon is that there is no odour from the dead bodies. The villagers attribute this to the scent of the perfumed ‘menyan’ tree from which Trunyan takes its name – Taru menyan. On the opposite shores if the lake the volcano looms high above the small village of Toya Bungkah, so named for its hot springs that flow into the cold lake waters. In recent years a narrow road has been constructed over the lava connecting this village with the outside world, and the hot springs have become a popular retreat.

Begin with custom ….
Tenganan is one of few original villages — known as Bali Aga or Bali Mula — in Bali. Strategically located in a valley and surrounded by a range of hills and forest, Tenganan village has developed its own way of life which borned a special custom. This custom then run and reigned the village from one generation to another. Then the culture as an accumulation of the custom presents a unique way of daily life. This has been running for centuries.
There at least four most popular and interesting things which are re-introduced to us by the civilization of this village, and make the village famous in all over the world. Let us begin with easiest one.
The Perang Pandan is one of the famous tradition which has listed in Indonesian Tourism Annual Event. Held in the range of June until Tenganan village has a precious custom on a based community forest. This village has maintained their forest and all its contents for centuries. Their anchestors know the meaning of a forest for their sustainability life. There is no enough space to tell you about the unique of Tenganan village.
Please ask our guide for any question you want to know about this village when you are in location. And it’s better for you to visit this village before you say that USA or the republic of India is the most democratic state in the world. Until at the end of 1980s, Tenganan has its real civilization. Isolated and independence. It is like a country and not much depend on other villages.
Tenganan is perhaps one of the most secluded and conservative villages on the island of Bali, protected by a strict code of isolationism, this ‘original‘ Bali Aga village has retained its unique culture and customs over the centuries. High walls surround the village, and marriage to outsiders is frowned upon , The famous double-ikat Gringsing woven cloth is made here, in a process which takes anything up to eight years to complete one piece. The aristocratic Tenganese own large tracts of fertile land, which they hire out to naighbouring villagers to farm on a share-cropping basis. A number of unusual rituals take place in this village on special holy days, and once a year there is a ritual blood-shedding fight of pandanus leaves in which all the men of the village prove their manhood.
The gamelan instruments used to accompany ceremony and dance are the ancient Selunding instruments, rarely seen now in other parts of Bali. From Tenganan it is only a few kilometers up the coast to the idyllic golden sands of Candi Dasa, recently developed resort that has sprung up around an ancient temple of the same name that is said to be directly linked to Mt. Agung by an underground cave.
Note that on the return trip stops can be made at the Goa Lawah bat cave temple, and to watch primitive salt making on the black sand beaches.

The restaurant at the stop over of Bukit Jambul provides large parking lot and the mouthwatering Indonesian cuisines. Bukit Jambul is another natural tourist object in Karang Asem regency exuding the harmonic sights of valley, sea, terrace rice field, mountain, clove trees, and the highland. The area is situated at Pesaban village, about 51 kilometers from Denpasar city. It’s very easy to reach this place as Bukit Jambul is right by the main road to Besakih Mother Temple.
Pura Besakih (Besakih Temple)
Positioned about 60 kilometers from Denpasar city, the Besakih Mother Temple is implicitly said as the biggest temple on the island and in Indonesia archipelago. Encompassing 18 temple clusters lengthening up the mountain, this sacred temple is right on the foot of Mount Agung. The weather is relatively cool and pleasant as the area is located about 1000 meters height above the sea level. The history of Besakih name was derived from “Basuki” meaning “safe”. The worshipers mostly choose to worship in the evening or early in the morning, since in the day time there are too many local and international visitors who come for sightseeing. Whenever the visitors enter the temple, wearing sarong and sash is somehow strongly required to respect the Balinese tradition.
Kerta Gosa (floating hall, court of justice)
Kerta Gosa is located in Semarapura town at the heart of Klungkung regency, only 1 hour from Denpasar city. The entire clusters area was originally named Taman Gili and Kerta Gosa was the name given to two Bale buildings, Bale Kerta Gosa and Bale Kambang. Somehow, Kerta Gosa is more famous than Taman Gili. The uniqueness of Kerta Gosa can be recognized from ornamented ceiling illustrating popular artwork, conveying good against the evil painted with the 2-dimension puppet style that the Kamasan village in Klungkung regency is renowned for. As the worthy heritage of Semarapura ancient kingdom, Kerta Gosa and Bale Kembang are now utilized as a sacred place for some Hinduism ceremonies. As historical complex, here the visitors can also find the ancient and history items such as some pictures of Klungkung King Family and its kinfolk.
